A TRUE FEMINISM
Feminism is failing because it has a false vision of womanhood and a wrong strategy for ending the oppression of women. The entire movement is a classic example of the mess humans create when they bypass God’s design and attempt to create their own. The solution to the problem of men dominating women is not to erase legitimate gender categories and create a plethora of new ones, to adopt the soul-destroying sexual practices of the most depraved men, or to eliminate the feminine in ourselves and then swap roles with our male counterparts. What’s desperately needed now is a feminism that tenaciously upholds God’s design for womanhood and resists the lies of culture and the corrosive effects of sin. We need a generation of women who cherish their femininity and embrace their unique place in the world. After all, we can’t expect men to respect and honor the beauty of womanhood if we don’t value it ourselves. Only when we do can we redeem what’s been perverted and lost and “shine among them like stars” in a “warped and crooked generation.”54
True feminism would embrace the essential God-designed differences between the sexes and uphold the natural family. And it would seek to restore motherhood in the eyes of the culture and the church, promoting it as an essential component of a flourishing society, as well as a high spiritual calling. It would encourage mothers to put their families first. And, instead of urging young mothers to stay in the workforce at whatever cost, it would seek to empower them so they can choose to stay at home. That said, true feminism would resist legalism and one-size-fits-all solutions. It would recognize the unique challenges each woman faces and would support her as she seeks to fulfill God’s call on her life. This new feminism would again deem it socially acceptable for young girls to proudly proclaim that they desire to be mothers when they grow up. It would stop treating motherhood as a hobby or part-time job and would elevate it to a place of prominence and respect.
It also would reject the notion that fathers can substitute for mothers. Men can be wonderful fathers—and they certainly have strengths that women don’t—but God has uniquely equipped mothers to nurture children. Besides the obvious presence of a womb and breasts, scientists are now discovering other ways that God has specially designed women for motherhood. Just as oxytocin bonds women to their sexual partners, it bonds them to their babies. When a mother holds her baby next to her skin and nurses, her brain is flooded with oxytocin, which produces a powerful bond between her and her baby and predisposes the mother to sacrifice for her child.55 Men can never bond with a baby the way a mother who carries her child for nine months and then nurses him can. They also can never exhibit a loving and nurturing feminine presence the way a healthy woman can. When it comes to nurturing, women have a distinct advantage.
